"The Church of Scientology, started by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hub bard to clear' people of unhappiness, portrays itself as a religion. In reality the church is a hugely profitable global racket that survives by intimidating members and critics in a Mafia-like manner (Time magazine, May 6th , 1991). In spite of the bad press there are more than 370 Scientology churches and missions in more than 100 countries with more than 500,000 adherents. Hollywood celebrities Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and Kirstie Alley are only a few of the Hollywood faithful who are actively endorsing Scientology.
